Chefchaouen or Chaouen as Moroccan call it, was founded in 1471 by the Cheriff Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami with the population being mainly made up of Andalusians and Moriscos who were expelled from Spain.
Chefchaouen’s blue walls are a famous challenge of interest. There are numerous theories as to why the walls had been painted blue. One popular principle is that the blue keeps mosquitos away, another is that Jews introduced the blue when they took refuge from Hitler in the 1930s. The blue is stated to symbolize the sky and heaven, and serve as a reminder to lead a non-secular life. However, according to some locals, the walls have been mandated to be painted blue genuinely to attract tourists at some factor in the 1970s.
